Sand And Ashes Slot - Hacksaw Gaming

In the iGaming industry, ancient Egypt is territory that has been worked to death. There is certainly no shortage of pyramids, pharaohs, and sarcophagi — nor of original cartoon spins on the theme like Le Pharaoh. The subject has been covered from every angle... or almost. Because Hacksaw Gaming has a gift for taking a well-worn theme and twisting it in a direction you never saw coming. With the Sand And Ashes slot, released in May 2026, the studio ventures into a far more oppressive version of Egypt — something closer to the brooding atmosphere of Wings of Horus.

No funny raccoon here, no colorful hieroglyphics — instead you are greeted by a red-eyed mummy posted to the left of the grid in a permanent sandstorm. According to the developer, it is the last one standing once the dust has settled over the desert, guardian of the kingdom of the Nile, firmly set on protecting Egypt's riches against overly curious looters. And unlike the classic movie mummies dragging their feet and groaning, this one appears to have kept full mobility... which makes it no less unsettling. But for those bold enough to dig deep enough beneath the sand and ashes, there are treasures to unearth — Wild Scarab Multipliers that latch onto the grid, trigger respins, and form the core of the gameplay, driven by firestorms and sandstorms that shake things up on the reels.

The Sand And Ashes slot is played on a 5x5 grid with 19 paylines. Volatility is medium, the RTP is 96.27%, and the maximum win potential reaches 10,000x the bet. You can wager between €0.10 and €100 per spin.

Wins form from left to right starting from the leftmost reel with combinations of 3, 4, or 5 identical symbols. Low-value symbols include the classic J, Q, K and A, paying between 0.10x and 1x the bet. Then come the thematic symbols: crocodile Sobek and Anubis, paying between 0.50x and 5x the bet; falcon Horus and the pharaoh, paying between 1x and 10x. The Wild Scarab, depicted as a beetle adorned with a red stone, can pay 10x the bet for a five-symbol combination while substituting for all paying symbols.

Wild Scarab Multipliers form the backbone of Sand And Ashes: when they appear, they trigger respin sequences that can be amplified by two types of storms — Firestorms and Sandstorms. Two Free Spins bonuses and purchase options round out the package.

Wild Scarab Multipliers and Respins
The Wild Scarab Multiplier acts as a regular Wild by substituting for all paying symbols, but it also carries a multiplier that applies to all winning combinations it is part of. Possible multiplier values are 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 10x, 25x, 50x, 100x, and 200x. If a winning payline includes multiple Wild Scarab Multipliers, their values are added before being applied to the win.

Once all regular wins have been paid, Wild Scarab Multipliers on the grid trigger a respin. During this respin, they stay locked in their positions while the other symbols spin again. If a new Wild Scarab Multiplier appears during a respin, another respin is triggered, and so on until no new scarabs land or there are no free positions left. Wins from each respin are paid at the end of that respin.

Firestorms
During a respin, a firestorm can trigger before the new symbols appear. When a Firestorm activates, no new symbols land and instead, the multiplier on every Wild Scarab Multiplier on the grid increases randomly by an additional value of 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 10x, 25x, 50x, or 100x. Once the multipliers have been boosted, new symbols arrive on the grid and wins are recalculated. Wild Scarab multipliers can keep climbing up to 999x.

Sandstorms
The sandstorm works a little differently. During a respin, it can also trigger before new symbols appear. When a Sandstorm activates, all Wild Scarab Multipliers are pushed one reel to the left. New symbols then arrive and wins are recalculated. Scarabs already on the leftmost reel cannot be moved, nor can those whose adjacent position on the same row is already occupied by another scarab. Firestorms and Sandstorms cannot trigger on the same respin.

Bonus Game: Desert Fury
Land 3 FS Scatter symbols at the same time in the base game to trigger this bonus with 8 Free Spins. It keeps the same mechanics as the base game with increased chances of Wild Scarab Multipliers appearing. Landing 2 or 3 additional FS symbols during the bonus awards +2 or +4 Free Spins.

Bonus Game: Storming Sphinx
Land 4 FS Scatter symbols at the same time in the base game to activate this bonus with 10 Free Spins. The mechanics change noticeably here: Wild Scarab Multipliers no longer trigger respins when they appear. Instead, Firestorms and Sandstorms can activate on every Free Spin and produce the same effects as in the base game. On top of that, all Wild Scarab Multipliers that land on the grid become persistent and stay there until the end of the bonus. They keep their position unless moved by a Sandstorm, and keep their multiplier unless boosted by a Firestorm. You can also receive +2 or +4 Free Spins with 2 or 3 additional FS symbols.

Up to 10,000x the bet beneath the sand and ashes
What is truly impressive is Hacksaw Gaming's ability to shift tone so effortlessly. The same studio that makes us smile with cartoon raccoons and fairy-tale princesses takes us here into a dark, hostile Egypt, with a determined mummy spreading its curse through the storms. It is a duality you rarely see among slot developers, who tend to stick to a single style. Sand And Ashes does not reinvent its mechanics per se — sticky Wilds with multipliers and respins are familiar territory — but the fusion between theme and gameplay is really well thought out. The Firestorms boost the scarab multipliers while the Sandstorms push them left to create new combinations, all within an atmosphere that fits the subject perfectly. The Storming Sphinx bonus with its persistent scarabs offers real long-term potential. Don't let the mummy's red-eyed stare put you off — it just might hand the luckiest players a win of up to 10,000x the bet.
