When the franchise starts showing its limits
It all started so promisingly with Le Bandit in the summer of 2023 — fresh mechanics, a likable character we were happy to follow across several titles... But Hacksaw Gaming doesn't seem to know the meaning of the word "enough." It must be working commercially, it must be profitable, but sometimes it feels like the studio is squeezing a vein dry like a trawler dragging its nets along the ocean floor for maximum yield, scraping up everything in its path. To be fair, Le Catcher isn't quite that bad — but the studio should be careful not to wear Smokey out. Luckily the themes change each time, even if we had already seen a fisherman before, and above all the studio needs to innovate more on the gameplay front rather than offering a slight rework with marginally tweaked mechanics that, in the end, don't change the experience much.

That said, if you generally enjoy the series, there's no real reason to skip this one. One more or one less, we are past counting, and the bonus cascades, collection mechanics, and progressive structure still have plenty of life left before they feel dated. Let's just hope Smokey's franchise doesn't end up drowning in the ocean of games it has created for itself.
