Slot machine Fortune Runner

Wow, it has been a very long time since we came across a dinosaur like this one! Greentube, the online subsidiary of Novomatic that publishes and distributes the group's land-based casino slots online, invites us to discover Fortune Runner, released in its digital version in May 2026 to remind us what the earliest classic slots used to look like. Play starts in the base game on the lower screen, and you can move up to the Top Game once enough coins have built up in the Super Meter.

Visually, expect nothing beyond the bare minimum. That means flat-drawn fruit, bells, BAR, red sevens and a black background. Nothing more than the basics, which in the end looks exactly like what you would find on physical cabinets a few decades ago.

Fortune Runner fits on three reels and three rows. The base game is played on a single payline, while the Top Game, up above, activates five. Volatility is high and bets range from 0.01 to 5 per spin. We could not find any mention of the RTP during our test, which is a pity but a common occurrence with titles carried over from land-based venues. Wins are expressed in coins rather than bet multipliers, so you need to multiply by the chosen coin value to work out the actual amount.

As for the base game symbols, cherries, lemons and oranges sit at the bottom of the paytable with 8 to 12 coins for three of a kind. Next come pears and plums (16), then grapes and bells (20). The melon climbs to 100 coins and the blue star to 200. The BAR plays a slightly unusual role, as it completes two matching fruits and the combination pays like a standard three of a kind. A single cherry on the first reel awards 0 or 4 coins, drawn at random, which is a direct holdover from the old machines. Finally, the crown acts as the Scatter and pays 20 coins for three anywhere on the grid.

The Top Game has its own paytable. Plums, oranges, pears and bells pay 40 coins, the seven, melon, grapes and strawberry rise to 80, and the FR logo awards 200 coins for three of a kind. Some symbols can also appear with an FR logo stuck on them, and these serve as Scatters in the most expensive mode.

On the mechanics side, you will find the Hold, the management of the Super Meter and the move to the upper screen.

The Super Meter
After every win in the base game, two buttons give you a choice: send the win to the standard coin meter, or to the Super Meter. The Super Meter acts as a bank to fund the Top Game, but the money held there cannot be withdrawn directly; it has to be brought back using the transfer button. The meter is capped at 1,000 coins and, beyond that, the surplus automatically returns to the main meter until it drops back below 200 coins.

Hold Feature
A maximum of two reels can be locked using the hold buttons before spinning again. A favourable combination is held automatically, and the cancel button releases everything. A spin using the hold costs the price of a normal bet, so nothing extra. However, the feature is not offered at just any time: not on the very first spin, not after a win, not after a spin that has already used the hold, and not after a bet increase.

Top Game
As soon as the Super Meter holds enough coins, the game switches to the upper reels, with five active lines and much higher payouts. Two options are available via the bet button: the first costs 1 coin from the standard meter plus 4 from the Super Meter, the second 1 coin plus 19 from the Super Meter. It is the latter that unlocks the FR Mystery Feature. The Top Game is selected automatically once 200 coins have been accumulated and stops as soon as the Super Meter falls below the chosen bet... or as soon as you cash everything out.

FR Mystery Feature
Reserved for the 20-coin bet, this option turns every FR symbol appearing on screen into a mystery win of between 10 and 200 coins, drawn at random. These amounts are added to the line wins landed on the same spin. This is the only real risk the game asks you to take: the bet is four times higher, but it is also the only place where several payouts can stack up on a single spin.

A dinosaur that fully owns it
The whole of Fortune Runner comes down to a simple loop: build up coins at the bottom, then go and spend them at the top, where the pay is better. The mechanics boil down to a meter to fill and a decision to make after every win. Some will find it terribly dated, and they won't be wrong. But there are times when you fancy finding a retro game like this one online, with no frills or flourishes, just what you need to place a bet and try your luck.
