Looks like there are still a few bandits left to lock up around here! The follow-up to one of the studio's most popular franchises, the Dead or Alive 3 Wanted slot arrives in March 2026, a long way in time, mechanics and style from the original Dead or Alive released in 2009, and not all that close to the 2019 second instalment, Dead or Alive 2, either. Yet here we are once more in the American desert, tracking outlaws dead or alive for rewards on the reels.
It has to be said that Netent has a taste for risk. The studio could have holstered the revolver after the second instalment and left the series with its reputation intact, but it chose to put its chips back on the table, at the risk of not pleasing quite as much as the first two did. It is well within its abilities, and we have no doubt about that.
So Dead or Alive 3 Wanted takes us back to the Wild West, with its seemingly peaceful canyons and its campfire still smoking on the right of the screen, patiently waiting for a locomotive to roll in and, inevitably, be held up. Well yes, this is the American West, friends, what did you expect? The scene is rendered in a very realistic setting where the grid stands in the middle of the desert, set into a sun-dried timber frame, like an old barn door raised at the edge of the canyon with a lantern hanging on its side. The look differs from the two previous titles, certainly not for the worse, just differently, to make the most of the action from the Wanted and Bounty Wilds in the base game and especially in the two levels of Free Spins, which can be triggered or bought outright.
On this wooden panel, the Dead or Alive 3 grid has 5 reels and 5 rows with 21 fixed paylines. Wins are formed from left to right on adjacent reels starting from the leftmost one, and only the longest combination is paid on each line. The RTP is 96.03%, volatility is high and bets range from 0.10 to 14 per spin. The max win is capped at 33,333x the bet, although that cap can double to 66,666x the bet in one very specific case that we will come to.
Engraved in rusted metal, the A, K, Q, J and 10 symbols sit at the bottom of the paytable with wins of between 0.10x and 5x the bet. Above them come the liquor flask, the hatchet, the revolver, the bloodied wolf trap and the sheriff's star, which pay between 0.50x and 50x the bet for three to five matching symbols. The wanted poster acts as the Wild and also pays 50x the bet for five in a line. It substitutes for all symbols except Bonus and Super Bonus.
Two types of Wilds and two levels of Free Spins drive the action.
Wanted Wilds
Wanted posters land with a random multiplier of x2, x3, x5, x10, x25, x50 or x100, applied to the combinations they take part in. Those that appear in the base game and during Re-Spins turn into Sticky Wilds and are carried all the way into the free spins. Those that land during Free Spins and Super Free Spins become sticky as well.
Bounty Hunter Wilds
The bounty hunter covers an entire reel every time it appears and collects the multipliers of all Wanted Wilds in view. When two or more hunters arrive at the same time, the one on the left picks up the multipliers from the wanted posters, and the one on the right picks up those from the wanted posters plus those of the hunters to its left. The collected values are added together. If two Bounty Hunters land on neighbouring reels, they merge into a single large Wild covering both reels, with the sum of the two multipliers. The hunter is therefore all the more useful when it arrives late, once the posters are already well established on the grid.
Re-Spins
Two golden bison skulls, the Bonus symbols, are enough to award a Re-Spin in the base game. It is the consolation prize when the third one fails to show, with the added benefit that Wanted Wilds obtained during this phase stay stuck in place too.
Free Spins
Three or more Bonus symbols launch 10 free spins, with a cash prize depending on the number of skulls collected: four symbols add a win of 50x the bet, and five symbols raise that win to 2500x the bet. During the bonus, Wanted Wilds become sticky and stay in place until the end, on top of those already accumulated in the base game. If Wanted Wilds land on all five reels during the same spin, 5 extra Free Spins are added.
Super Free Spins
If one of the three triggering symbols is a Super Bonus, it is the Super Free Spins that begin. Same length, same Sticky Wilds system, but with a guarantee that changes a great deal: a Bounty Hunter Wild lands on every spin. The multipliers stacked on the sticky wanted posters are therefore collected spin after spin.
Elevate
Netent groups its buy options under the Elevate name, with five choices of which only one can be active per spin:
- Bonus Hunter: for 2x the bet, at least one Bonus or Super Bonus symbol appears on the reels.
- Wanted Wilds: for 5x the bet, only the x5, x10, x25, x50 and x100 multipliers can land, and the win cap doubles to 66,666x the bet.
- Hunted Spins: for 100x the bet, three or more Bonus symbols land and trigger the Free Spins.
- Bounty Hunter: for 150x the bet, two Bounty Hunter Wilds land at the end of each spin, and three during the Super Free Spins.
- Dead or Alive Spins: for 1000x the bet, three or more Bonus symbols land including one Super Bonus, which launches the Super Free Spins directly.
A bounty of 66,666x the bet, but with strings attached
Netent has not tried to go bigger or flashier than the first two instalments; it has simply taken a different direction, without one-upmanship, and with a design that holds together perfectly well. The most interesting choice is the clean split between the game's two moods: the calm base game at the edge of the canyon, and the bonus phase that tips over into the train robbery. That contrast gives the bonus a weight it would never have had if the game had gone for non-stop commotion from start to finish. You end up waiting for that train.
The look will probably divide opinion, as this dark, realistic rendering moves away from the bolder style of the two previous titles. Whether you like it or not is a personal matter, but the work is well done. In terms of substance, it is the stacking of Sticky Wilds and the bounty hunter's collection of multipliers that carry the game. It invents nothing, but it is simply well put together: the wanted posters pile up with their values, the Bounty Hunter comes along behind and collects, and two hunters on neighbouring reels merge and add their multipliers together. During the Super Free Spins, with a hunter guaranteed on every spin, the whole thing runs at full tilt and can potentially build the biggest wins.
One point is still worth dwelling on, because the 66,666x the bet advertised as the maximum potential can only be reached through the Wanted Wilds option in Elevate, priced at 5x the bet. In normal play, the cap drops to 33,333x, exactly half. The extra cost is modest, but you should be aware that the figure shown on the game's info sheet is not the one you are playing for if you simply press Spin. Either way, the posters are still nailed to the wood, and the bounty is still waiting for someone patient enough to come and claim it.
